Climbing in Cumbria

Rock Climbing is one of the most popular activities in the lake district.  Many local crags are best suited to beginners and intermediates and when it rains, there are many indoor climbing walls. The english lake district attracts hundreds of climbers from all over the UK and the world every year. It is not just climbers who are attracted to the lake district, the area is home to some of the best locations to undertake many exciting new sporting opportunities, including canoeing, mountain biking, horse riding, walking and rambling, fell running, sailing, and much more. For many it is the scenery and the rough local terrain contrasting with the lush green valleys that attract the visitors to the two busiest tourist towns (Keswick, north and Ambleside, south). Both these towns thrive all year round on the tourism industry and every other business is directly linked with outdoor activities. If you are unsure where to turn when it comes to visiting the lake district then you should head to the assistance of outdoor activity centers, these centers have highly trained staff that assist you in a days activities, making a day in the lakes fun for all the family. Personally I recommend getting in touch with the Newlands Activity and Adventure Center situated conveniently near the central town of Keswick. "You will be fitted with the necessary safety equipment and introduced to techniques that allow you to reach the top of the climb.  In addition, you may be taught the basic rope work skills to allow you to safely tie in and belay a partner; a wonderful exercise in mutual trust.  Needless to say, all of this happens under the watchful eye of your Instructor." - Newlands
